Can you find in what way iPhone is bigger than Nokia? Answer is at the bottom of this post, so continue reading.
I have not been using Google trends that much, but today I decided to do some "trending". I wanted to see how the mobile computing terms compare today (see my earlier term poll ). These results are showing the past 12 months trends with selected terms only (naturally some names could have variables as well, like eee & eeepc, that could change the overall results, but these should still show the main differences between these terms)
While I was doing this, I decided to compare these results to some of the other hot trends in mobile space today. Those can be seen on the bottom part of this post. It's also very interesting to see the differences in search results by country & city (these can be seen at the trends site, by clicking the images)
You can click the images to be linked directly to actual google trend results, where you can adjust your own variables or throw in some additional terms, to see how those compare. TIP. you could save this post to you social bookmarks (link buttons at the bottom) and easily come back to use these links for updated trends, when ever you want to compare how these trends have developed over time. Yep all work done for you, nice and neat ;) - While you're at it, why not use this link to subscribe to my RSS feed as well ;)
First chart is the Mobile computer terms, similar than those that are in my term poll (note Netbook term is not there, because at that time it was not significant).
As we can see from this, netbook is really a hot term and can be expected to pass any other term by searches really soon. Also we could expect the rise of netbook term to continue, as this can be expected if we look at the bottom chart about the news reference. That will have impact on the future search results.
Second one is showing what happens if we take eeepc term along with these others. We can see that eeepc, is WAY up there in it's own level. Remember that eeepc was a term for "mini laptop" before there was any other term to describe it. This clearly explains why Asus wants to ride the eeepc wave as much and as long as they can, trying to make eeepc a synonym for netbook. However, even if the gap today is quite big, in the long run I don't expect that to remain, but see the netbook term getting stronger, again based on the news reference volume & and the fact that netbook is much better describing and generic term.
Next we will compare eeepc term to other product names/brands in this UMPC/Netbook/MID space to see how those compare. As you can see from this chart, eeepc is getting some serious competition. Also it's very interesting to compare the search and news volumes (to & bottom part of the chart). How can that be explained?I imagine that some real marketing & advertising done makes up the difference. As we know Best Buy etc. have been marketing Aspire one lately.
You may wonder why I have selected these to compare? I can say it's pretty random selection and by clicking the image you can do your own adjustments.
OK, so next what? - Perhaps we should compare how does these ultramobile, netbook etc. compare to some more traditional "main" mobility terms. So let's compare eeepc to iPhone, Nokia, etc. So we can see how far those are from the current leader on it's own level eeepc....
Sure enough HUGE different! - can you spot the eeePC?, Yep, it's that red one in the bottom. I guess this shows just how insane the iPhone hype has been and how it keeps changing the mobile game. Again there are various ways to compare, like Nokia has many names as do Motorola & Windows Mobile, but this is a quick peak to main terms. What is most amazing (but not surprising) to me is the News reference volume of iPhone compared to others. I guess there needs to be something there...
(Again you can click the image to go and adjust the terms and see how those compare. )
I was also trying to see what impact Google's android would bring to these trends, but in mobile space it's such a small term at the moment that you can only put that to be compared with the first results. Instead I wanted to do one more with just the main brand names and put the Google, Nokia, Microsoft and Apple to the trend mixer.
WOW, is Google again in another level? - At this point I was thinking that could there be any another term that I could quickly trow in to the mix, that could be bigger than Google? Yes I could, try Facebook. See how that goes beyond Google and rising steadily. Again whats more interesting, are the differences between News & searches...
As you can see Google trends can be too much fun. What do you think how would Obama, Elvis or Britney compare between these results. Why not go and check it out ;)
As you can see, the right answer to question in the beginning was, iPhone is bigger than Nokia in News Reference Volume.
And finally here's one challenge for you. Can you think of anything that would be bigger than Facebook in search volume trends?
